As a Lead member of Joico’s elite Color Competency Team, Joico International Guest Artist Cherry Petenbrink brings a vast range of skills and experience to every educational scenario. The talented colorist, former salon owner, celebrity stylist, editorial hairdresser and Hollywood film color consultant draws upon all of her knowledge, experience and insights to share with hairstylist's and clients worldwide.
In film work or editorial you have to have a vision and be able to carry that vision through to the desired end result,” Cherry comments. “Those skills parallel the skills that a colorist needs in the salon every day and I’m excited to be able to help Joico color pros develop and fine tune those abilities in order to achieve greater success.”
Her most recent film work includes hair and wig coloring for Scarlett Johansson (as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow) and Sebastian Stan (as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War. Anne Hathaway character for her role in the newly released "COLLOSSAL", as well as Nicole Kidman for her role in "Big Little Lies" both just wrapped. Saving Mr. Banks is also on the list of projects with her hair color and hair work signature on it (work on Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Bradley Whitford) set to release December 2013. The list also includes Imogen Poots for her lead in the DreamWorks production Need for Speed (due out in March 2014).
Cherry served as the lead color consultant for the first film in the hugely popular The Hunger Games series, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Elizabeth Banks, Josh Hutcherson and Stanley Tucci, and her inventive and creative work launched a frenzy of amazing trends in color design when the film released in March of 2012.
Like many of the stylists she teaches, Cherry’s career began in a small town—Aberdeen, South Dakota—where she attended cosmetology school. After working as a stylist in South Dakota for three years, the self-described “military kid” moved to a series of cities and countries, including Florida, Northern California, Idaho, Connecticut, the UK and Germany. For ten years, she settled in Georgia, where while raising their 3 children she and her husband opened a 4,600 square foot salon and spa and built it into a million dollar business with 31 employees in a town of just 36,000 people.
Cherry says that her introduction to Joico 17 years ago was “love at first sight,” and after bringing the products into her salon, her retail sales skyrocketed. So when her local Joico ESM approached her about interviewing for an educational position, she jumped at the offer. She started as an advisor with the Joico education team, and worked her way up to International Guest Artist in just a few short years. Traveling the world and sharing her passion for all things hair and promoting Joico has been a major focus in the past few years. Creating wearable, trending and everyday hair color is still apart of her career in her private studio in Beverly Hills Ca 90211. A two year side road took her on a Journey opening the Goldwell Salon and Academy just steps away from the beaches of Santa Monica Ca. in 2009-20011.
