BEAT THE WINTER HEAT

Now that the weather is cooling off all over the country it's time to turn up the

indoor heat. With extra heat comes extra dry affecting HAIR dramatically

sometimes. You may already be noticing that once the heats on your hair starts to

become more dry, more fly away and more dull.

Quick remedy #1...... Apply a deep conditioner like JOICO "Intense Hydrater to

dry hair for 5-10 min before you shampoo. When your hair is dry it is more

accepting of moisture than when hair is wet. Absorbing better and deeper for

more dramatic results. Shampoo and use daily conditioner. The intense moisture

treatment will rehydrate and moisturize the hair. shampoo and style hair

results.... softer, shinier and hydrated hair with less fly always.

Quick remedy #2...... Before bed apply a few drops of serum, or oil excellent

choice JOICO "K-Pak restorative Oil". With arginine oil & essential amino acids you'll

see and feel the difference after one night. Depending on length and density apply

1-4 drops of oil emulsify in hands and apply mid shaft through ends. If hair is long

enough braid loosely or pull up in a loose bun. Shampoo in the morning or re-style

Quick remedy #3....... Pop into your favorite Salon for 20 min gloss treatment. I

love JOICO Vero K-Pak chrome. Think of it like a fresh top coat on a manicure,

instant shine! A clear gloss or one with subtle warmth will have your dull dry hair

looking shining healthy & reflect for up to 14 shampoos.

Change up your products switch to a more moisturizing shampoo & conditioner

during the cold winter months when the heat is on. Indulge inextra hair masques

& reconstructor JOICO K-Pak is the perfect fix all. K-Pak replaces essential amino

acids & protein replacing only what's missing so never to heavy, just

reconstruction, rehydration and replace all that's missing in dull dehydrated hair.

Perfect Pastels

PASTEL hair has been building momentum in the past few years.

Effie Trinkett so confidently wore these amazing shades in the much

anticipated HUNGER GAMES. I was very proud to have created her

signature pink, lavender and chartreuse color for this blockbuster

film. Receiving credit as Colorist was a huge honor. I feel a little bit

responsible that more and more requests for these coveted shades

are coming into the salon. I decided this was a perfect opportunity to

share my tips, tricks and go too's when creating perfect pastels. We are

seeing pastels all over the runways in huge mega brand ad campaigns

and all around us on the streets, grocery store and airports. These

shades have become epidemic globally-internationally and all ages are

embracing this HOT haircolor trend.

This  service I recommend only be performed by a licensed

professional. Using bleach and other Pursulfates can cause severe

damage in untrained hands if it isn't properly mixed, applied and

processed.

Because pastel are very light and ethereal it's very important to clarify

your blonde before applying your final pastel formula. In order for your

pastels to show strong it is very important to remove all yellow and

have a "clear" blonde canvas. Bleach alone will get you to palest yellow

blonde a Demi permanent options can refine but the real secret is a

true toner. Amoniated toners will give additional lift with control. This

guarantees a refined clear blonde void of yellow. A clear clean canvas

will accept your chosen pastels with perfect longer lasting true pastels.

Bleach hair apply Joico Vero CREME Lightener with 10V 3% or 20V

6% Never apply HEAT to bleach or lighteners. if the is to porous and

damaged it will not hold the pastel shades.

Process & Lift to a level 9-10 shampoo damp dry apply TONER formula

Joico Vero K-Pak Color TSB and/or TPB + CCV with 10V (less lift more

refinement) or 20V (more lift less refinement) 10-20 mine shampoo.

PINK:

Dry hair completely and apply Joico K-Pak Color Intensity 3/4 clear + 1/

4 Pink process at least 20min

*1/2 & 1/2 for more density, longer lasting result.

LAVENDER:

*3/4 & 1/4 for deeper, longer lasting result

Spring into fall....

With Fashion week and Hair Show season is in full swing my event schedule is very action packed with

exciting events all over the US. Preparing for all of these various and all unique events, workshops and

shows requires dicipline & organization two virtues that are not a part of my DNA. I tend to be very fly

by the set of my pants and go with the flow kind of gal. So imagine this requiries me to focus another

virtue I lack. I watch the style sites, pay attention to the top bloggers and keep a very watchful eye

on the fall runways. googling and surfing the net searching for the next major hit. After all this is my

opportunity to get a glimpse into the future, the next big trend that I will be putting my own twist on

and visual interpretation of for my very own HAIRBYCHERRYP TOUR. Eleven events in ten weeks! Getting

sleep (even if on the plane) eating healthy and enjoying a glass (or two) of wine, most of all HAVING FUN

WITH PEOPLE I ADORE that's what gets me through this busy time of the year.

These events vary from 70 Stylists for hands on technical classes to private key account salon one-
on-one days to shows with thousands of hair dressers getting motivated & inspired by what I have to

share on behalf of JOICO INTL. I'll be creating power points, color, cutting and setting mannequin heads

over and over, plus building wigs and hairpieces to showcase at the BIG SHOWS. Music needs to be

picked, waredrobe is huge not to mention choreography, oh and makeup inspiration. I like to storyboard

individually for biggest & smallest stops. I make collages for my theme ideas this keeps me focused and

on point. Including Instagram,Twitter, Facebook social media has become such a vital part in reaching

the broader audiences. At the end of the days it is important to me that what I share is relevant and of

use to the stylists participating. After all they are taking time out of their lives and usually a coveted day

off to boot.

I love that all of this also strengthens my work and expertise in the salon. Every event brings a new

lesson, tip or trick. One feeds the other. Relating to behind the chair hairdressers because I am one.

Keeping up with celebrity clients during this in progress filming time of the year can get tricky, but

somehow we always make it happen even if it happens at 6AM or 10PM. I love a CHALLENGE it keeps

my blood flowing and my mind sharp.

on the move...

"ON THE MOVE"

As a gypsy at heart moving, relocating and starting over isn't an unfamiliar place for me to be. A lot of dynamics play into a professional move being successful. I was an established colorist in my previous location so it makes sense for me to make all the right decisions to ensure that SUCESS follows me to my new location. Great client service, consistency in results and punctuality all play an important part in ensuring SUCCESS follows me. None of the above mentioned elements will change in fact they will only be enhanced and perfected further. What has changed is the openness and decor of the new location. A huge window with indirect lighting, all white furniture and fixtures with the exception of a living wall of greenery and colorful plants give an outdoorsy, fresh, clean and lively atmosphere. I evaluated the things that I viewed as non positive aspects in my former space and designed a fresher lighter brighter version in my new studios space. Continuing to provide my clientele with the best possible hair services will continue to be my priority. A change of zip code 90211 Beverly Hills 1/4 mile from my house makes it even more pleasant no miserable commute promises that I will always have a smile and traffic will never create tardiness.

I'm grateful for all of my loyal clients and all of the new buzz since moving. I've done more make overs and corrective color clients in my first month in my new space than I did in six months at my former space. Remain passionate & dedicated to your craft and the business will come. Once the word is out that you " Deliver on a promise".... Your GOLDEN.

SET THE STAGE!

Hard work, loyalty and dedication pays off. For the past two years I have had the privilege of teaching and sharing my vast knowledge of coloring, designing and styling wigs at Zotos Artistic Institute in Darien Ct just 30 min outside of NYC. The workshop is called "Set the Stage" two workshops a year are offered.  I cover everything from Commercial to Avant Garde and Expensive/Inexpensive to Synthetic hair pieces, wigs and wefts/extensions. The workshop is two full days. Day one is look and learn with me talking, sharing and creating until you think your brain might explode! We cover every aspect. Coloring, cutting, applying, wig wraps, lace-front application and removal add in pieces and maintenance are all a part of this action packed first day. Three models go through 4 transformations right before your eyes! Day two is hands on finishing coloring wigs, extensions and pieces and story boarding your vision. I have been told over and over that this class opens up a whole new world for the attendees. Inspiring them to do photo shoots, theatre and TV. The class has such a vast topic that the knowledge and skills learned can in corporate into salon life. We all have family, members, friends or clients experiencing cancer and the effects of chemotherapy. Wigs are becoming more mainstream. As my mother battles cancer she was so grateful that I could custom cut & color her wig to look so much like her pre treatment hairstyle that her granddaughter didn't know it was a wig!!! I love to share the knowledge I have gained throughout my career and always learn new things during my workshop.

*LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN THE NEXT CLASS*

Staying Inspired

Recently I was experiencing a very odd twist in my career. It has been a long time since this has happened as I always stay adventurous, fearless and forward thinking when it comes to my job. I was feeling uninspired, unmotivated and a bit stagnant. Usually a big film opportunity or presentation option comes along that makes my heart and mind race with the thought of a new challenge. Writers experience writers block and I believe I was going through a similar type of mental block. What needed to be presented to get my brain and heart jumped started that would lead me to be in the passionate place I longed for again?
The answer....... An international travel opportunity to launch a new JOICO distributor, consisting of an AMAZING  Runway show with 20 models with multiple looks in a HOT Rooftop nightclub in Kuala Lumpar Malaysia! Suddenly that familiar feeling had returned. A heart pounding brain racing kind of feeling reminiscent of what I felt upon finding out I'd be Lead Color Consultant on the blockbuster record breaking movie of the decade HUNGER GAMES.
This show had to be beyond ordinary, above all expectations and mostly make Joico as a brand the most magnificent significantly talked about professional product offered! Collaborating with Kim Judkin a fellow artist who I respect and admire even more after this event was the extra special element in making this a career changing opportunity of a lifetime. Never have I worked with a more dedicated, hard working and motivated group of professional as the unstoppable TEAM from all over Asia. From Missie, Aileen, Zayne and Hidero to our artist support Tanya, Gilbert, Addrey, Hayden to the irreplaceable Jimmy Wong choreographer (and soooo much more) and his entire TEAM everyone gave 110%.
I thought I would return exhausted but instead I am more driven inspired and motivated to take on the world of beauty. I am anxiously planning, researching and shopping for the next BIG trip to Thailand in July for a repeat performance. Once again having the privilege to work with this amazing TEAM. For now it's off to Cleveland to wow 50 + stylists with innovative salon usable techniques and Joico Vero color knowledge. Then Seattle followed by a personal holiday with my family in Hawaii where I will no doubt be motivated to write create new techniques and edit my recent photo shoot consisting of 3 collections.
This opportunity was a games changer an eye opener and a chance for me to have new exciting insight into the Industry I love so much! Because of thus every part of my life will be enhanced with this renewed sense of purpose. *HERE'S TO MAKING THE WORLD A MORE COLORFUL PLACE! *

STAY TUNED FOR SPECTACULAR PROFESSIONAL IMAGES FROM THE SHOW.

Spring is finally here!!!

Even though I just heard it's snowing in Chicago and Australia is in their fall season, here in North America and many parts of the world it's SPRING! Chinese consider spring new beginnings trees and flowers blooming with bright beautiful shades. Living in LA, spring is celebrated as if we had a long cold winter. It's all about celebrating, outdoor concerts like  COACHELLA are in full swing for two weeks of embracing music and the new season.  Clients are more than ready to lighten up, brighten up and make changes for the spring season. Ombré / Balayage is a great way to create subtle or dramatic seasonal changes. I love to get creative with Flash Effects interior, exterior or full effects can be adapted to virtually every client that sits in my chair.
To keep it modern I recommend lightening 2 levels at most,  avoid streaks or stripes as this will create an out dated look, instead stagger where the color starts from the scalp by 2"-4" lightly feathering or melting the color in. Coppers with sunset Ombré melting or Pastels for Blondes are more popular than ever! Brunettes are sun kissed ribbons of caramel to honey tone.
Using warm tones to gloss adds a brighter lighter feel as cool colors absorb light and warm colors reflect. Cutting a fringe, side swept bang or extra layers are all favorite for seasonal changes. Follow Jennifer, Shalene and Julianna and go big.... PIXIES are still Trending big time! Braids, buns and eclectically pinned up hair are all HOT for the warmer spring season! Mermaid waves are softer than ever and stick straight seems to be an ever fading FAD!
COACHELLA proved to be an ever evolving, trendsetting opening to spring. I've added some of my favorite looks! Wish I was 20 something just for this experience. I can and will live vicariously through my young trending seasonal changing clients! I'm committed to keeping my clients of all ages on trend and always recommend something new for Spring.

Walking the Red Carpet

Walking the Red Carpet
Getting Colorist credit for Hunger Games I made history as a colorist, all of the attention surrounding Jennifer Lawrence's, KATNISS character, as well as Josh, as Peeta and Effie's trend setting pastel color that launched a frenzy of copycat colors across the world! I never dreamed any experience like that could be topped! Then came Emma Thompson & Tom Hanks for Saving Mr. Banks. The opportunity to be a part of something as history making as transforming Black Widow/ Natasha Romanoff into a modern day super hero. EPIC
I have been invited a few times to Movies Premiers, never have I been able to attend or quite frankly, low budget and really uninterested. When my dear friend Jeri Baker sent me a text it had an image attached and said she had received two tickets from Scarlett for us to attend the the WORLD PREMIER of Captain America Winter Soldier IN LOS ANGELES as her guest. You can imagine my heart began racing immediately. The date, what was the date.....? With the schedule I keep, fear that I would be away was the first thing to come to mind. I pulled up my calendar and couldn't believe my eyes I was not only in LA but my calendar CLEAR for the evening of March 13 2014 at 7:00 PM!
Of course next was what to wear..... Colors of the season - purples & blues......What is trending -Jumpsuits..... Need to look slim and totally put together. Hair and make up needed extra care.
After a busy day, Getting my visa for a trip to China & Malaysia, shopping for hair and supplies for my Set the Stage event at the Artistic Institute, packing the three bags to transport wigs etc. I was pushing it for get Red Carpet ready time!
Arrive, check in , get my ticket, and WALK almost an entire block of step & repeat by myself! Jeri, Scarlett's personal hairstylists on film & Heba her make up artists are who brought me into Captain America & Chef both required BIG hair color make overs, were on set working on other projects so I met them there (saved good seats because they would be running late. Turns out we had amazing reserved seating!) the cameras weren't flashing fast & bright and no one asked for autographs but oh what a feeling! I worked it, you know I did.
Once the movie started we all sat with baited breath waiting for our girl Natasha to be unveiled! She was BREATHTAKING! Her cut, make up & AMAZING copper hair left us with our jaws dropped, huge smiles and between us tears weld up in my eyes. I was PROUD of my part in making her character a HOT, SEXY, SUPERHERO that a million women are going to want to emulate.
I realize it's just hair- but come on.... It's Scar J she graces the covers of 100's of beauty mags and is the face of DOLCE & Gabbana! By the way I colored her hair days before the shoot for the new campaign with Mathew M so I'll just go ahead and take credit for her hair color in the ads too! She is a lead character , she is a beauty icon not some thing to take lightly. Scarlett, Jeri and Heba knew exactly what they wanted to see on screen presented their thoughts and ideas to me and WE came up with a look together. Such an honor and privilege. GO TEAM WIDOW!
* I also had the privilege of doing color & smoothing treatments for Sebastian Stan aka THE WINTER SOLDIER he looked pretty awesome too thanks to Barbara Cantu.

CAN'T WAIT TO SHARE THE NEXT BIG PROJECT!

Flash Effects

FLASH EFFECTS is my signature coloring technique. It was conceived from a need to organize my coloring ideas to present to 60 + Editors & Beauty Bloggers who wanted to write about, the NEXT big hair color trend.  Flash Effects is sub divided Internal = Highs, lows, brights or a combination of dimensional placed internally into the hair. External is the same options but externally on top of the head. Combine the two and you have full effects. The idea is that the color emulates what happens with the Flash of a Camera.
Thus technique is very versatile, salon friendly, client versatile and adjustable to all lengths, textures or color options. I am currently teaching hands on classes all over the US check my calendar for a city near you. If you are interested in an appt check out my Style Seat or leave a comment on my website. I've been asked a lot recently how I ended up where I am today, this is my story.

My journey in the Beauty Industry began 30+ years ago as a Graduate of Stewarts Beauty College in 1982 located in Aberdeen S. Dakota. My parents would have rather me have finished college, but 1 semester in I just wasn't feeling that path however I did complete one year with less than average marks. I was happier stocking & ordering inventory and being in charge of maintaining the health & beauty aisle at the local grocery store.

I have always viewed life as an adventure a seek and conquer quest which is why I consider myself a gypsy at heart. My life has been a constant adventure as a child of a 20 yr military father and a  mother who was born and raised in UK life was full of travel, new beginnings and experiences. I then continued in this exciting and always evolving lifestyle by marrying my husband of 26 years, Steve, who is a 20 year Navy Veteran. Together we moved 11 times in 10 years, raised our children, ran a successful Salon and conquered our quests as they came. Often Adventure comes in disguise for example six month deployments with three children , a household to maintain, a job and your closest family is 3000 miles away. I learned to multi task and juggle like no other. When the deployment came to an end the prize and reward was our family unit was stronger and back together my husband always taking on as much of the extras as he could while I focused on the next adventure. Or moving to what I thought would be a stifling small town to owning a million dollar grossing business..... Who knew????

Our business adventure flourished more than ever anticipated. Projecting we would homestead (Steve had to extend his sea duty and delay his shore time) in St Mary's, GA for long enough to keep the kids in one high school and not up root them at such a challenging time in their lives also proved to be a learning experience. It was not a real goal of mine to own a business after all that meant long term commitment, sticking with a plan and staying in one place (not the best scenario for an adventurous gypsy). Living in a small southern town didn't at first glance seem to offer the ability to flourish and explore...... Or did it??? I had already been discovered (large increase in retail sales. I came to GA from a very booshie salon in Connecticut, where retail sales were everything!) by my DSC and recruited to educated and spread the JOICO philosophy. The epiphany to open a salon came to me out of frustration, boredom and an untapped idea. My past salon experiences (I was always attracted to the most beautiful successful salon in town) I opened my salon 800 sq ft salon with 4 employees this high end boutique salon offered exceptional customer service as well as services and talent that only larger cities offered. We took this sleepy little town by storm. See all of the women who were also planted there from all over the US & world ( because of Navy spouses) were heading to Jacksonville and Ritz Carlton Amelia Island to have services done or work. Within a year we expanded to 1600 sqft and added Spa treatments like facials, massage, mani & pedi's plus tanning. Next came the move to a new bigger more beautiful build to specification Salon & Spa SHABANG's was a "Many service salon". At 3600 sq ft we soon out grew this location. Expanding to 4600sqft, adding a Barber shop for our military, law enforcement/ male population. With big comfy Italian leather barber chairs, flat screens with CNN, ESPN, NEWS , a popcorn machine and venting machine. During this four year period Steve was still deploying for 3 months home 3 month away. Our children learned independence and hard work. We were hands on business owners. We painted every base board door and wall in this Salon. Steve laid all the flooring oversaw the pluming and electrical. Our children were familiar with the software and could fill in as receptionist, inventory takers or enlist the payroll. We had a great relationship with our local Rotary, chamber of commerce and all of the resourceful community programs. Most of all we nurtured our amazing TEAM OF STYLISTS. This Adventure reached a plateau after four years of maintaining its final stage. Steve was finally on shore duty the last 3 years and working at a nuclear power plant 90 miles away. My gypsy soul became restless. Two of our three children were graduated and our son off in the Navy ( so proud he has followed in dad & grandpas  foot steps  serving our country). My husbands said to me " you followed me and stood by me for 20 years , it's your turn. If you could live anywhere where would WE go? I' d been traveling to LA and had worked on several movies and television projects. We loved living in San Diego & San Fran so LA seemed logical. Full of adventure and quests to conquer! Thank goodness everyday in LA is an adventure especially if you commute on the freeways! 5 years in LA has proven to be the best decision- Getting Colorist credits on the largest Blockbuster Film was ground breaking never before done. Six Oscar nominated actors in 2013  as character work in film or television proved another career landmark. It just may be time to venture into a whole new arena I'm the Industry! ....... Well until this restless GYPSY SOUL yearns again.

TIPS TO SUCESS:

*Align yourself with people you aspire to become

*Always treat every opportunity as an adventure, when it becomes an obligation the passion leaves.

*Your greatness is not what you have it's what you give.

*If it doesn't feel right ( heart pounding palms sweating in an excited kind of way) it probably isn't.

*Always put value on what you do!

*Continue to grow your skills, in not always the most obvious way.

*Be fearless every challenge is a conquer

*Deliver on a promise.... Your GOLDEN

*Treat every decision with fairness

*Treat others as you want to be treated

*Never step on toes but find a way to make it work

*Solutions are key to any problem!

As a child, you had not yet set limits for yourself. The sky was the limit. You hadn't yet come to the conclusion that you were good at certain things, and not so good at other things. You knew who you were, but you didn't have the same restrictions or limits that you have now. If you really want to make the most of an upcoming opportunity, Libra, you will have to tap your inner child. You will have to get in touch with the childlike spirit that believes anything is possible. Because right now, anything is possible.

Just another Thursday evening in LA!

Last night was an exciting evening of being a celebrity cosmetologist speaking on and referring skincare. Not just any skincare but an amazing natural organic skincare. Previse Skin Care first entered my life through an associate in the hair Industry? Adam Moreno recommended me to Sean Patrick Harrington (president & founder Previse Skin Care) to promote and activity speak to and recommend this amazing line of Organic Natural skin care approach. The event was host by Suzi Amos Cameron co-founder MUSE SHCOOL & her Producer husband James Cameron. I was very excited and honored to do Dr. Ellen Murmurs' (skin expert & Moh's surgeon) hair for the event as well as mingle and chat up Previse with her and Sean. This star studded events goal was to raise money through purchase & donation to fund tuition for under privileged children. All sponsors including www.previseskincare proudly represent the rise of sustainable, recyclable, natural, organic companies. It was so refreshing to see celebrities and sponsors alike so passionate for the cause. The RED CARPET GREEN DRESS event is in it's fifth year. It provides a Red Carpet dress designed and created with organic fabric to be worn on the OSCAR RED CARPET. Reese Witherspoon has worn the "GREEN DRESS". It was announced for the first time Kellan Lutz  with be wearing the "GREEN TUX". I asked him what the fabric felt like and he said "soft and silky. Audrey also participated as an attendee and PR & Production assistant.

My love for reds

I am a HUGE fan and partial to WARM RED HAIR color. From STRAWBERRY BLONDES TO hair "ON FIRE" to subtle rich "AUBURNS. Reds can be a challenge..... Fade fast...... Appear hollow.....Yellow & Orange instead of Gold & Copper. Veteran red heads can't be RED enough and clients venturing into the world of Red want to go there gradually. If you client is a level five or darker lift & deposit is required. If the client is level 6 or lighter deposit with a CREME Demi or Liquid Demi would do the trick. I love a dimensional Red using lighter & darker levels within 3 levels layered into zig zag highs, brights & lows. Avoid N or balanced shades if vibrancy is the desire. If a more subtle or natural Red us desired then perhaps natural or balanced shades will assist in a more natural outcome. I find color building ( layering color example = Demi deposit only then a liquid Demi to gloss, like a top coat) to be my most helpful technique to ensure longevity. Having created amazing natural Strawberry blonde for Nicole Kidman (Stoker) and Scarlet Johansson (Black Widow Captain America Winter Soldier) I have become even more passionate about MY RED hair color formulas.

Photoshoot 2/10/14

I wanted to share some behind the scenes photos from our shoot 2/10/14, and also wanted to talk about the inspiration.

The idea was to create multiple collections within one shoot. The inspiration evolved around a Modern Punk/Renaissance feel. Working with textures and elements reminiscent of these two very different periods. Texture in the hair and wardrobe working together to create a very modern yet old feeling. The hair has a lot of geometry and height also giving a strong influence in the direction of renaissance. The vibrant un natural color in the hair lead to the punk era. Ombre is a very hot modern hair color trend now so that is how the modern was incorporated into these images. I'm really excited to see these collections published.

I am a huge fan of wigs. I feel I can have so much more freedom than finding models to commit to cutting and hair color. I like to find aspiring models or models who have been stereotyped in a certain genre of modeling and want to expand their portfolio. Honestly having a good time and getting to create your vision is what is most important to me. Once I have laid out my storyboards I have a meeting of the minds, including photographer, makeup artist, stylist and assistances. We put our ideas together and develop a blueprint. Call sheets are made and timelines are set. This ensures the best results come of our efforts. Things come up and a look sometimes just happens which keeps it fun. Hundreds of shots are taken but when you see the hero image it's worth all the time planning, prepping and creating. If and when the work is published its a great accomplishment! Thank you to my entire TEAM!
